What uniform should be worn when? And what are "Scruffs"?!Always have your Necker for every Scouting activity (you may not have to wear it dependent on the activity but you should always bring it).
"Top half uniform" = Necker & Woggle and Shirt (or Polo) These should be worn for "flag break" at the beginning and "flag down" at the end of meetings. You can chose between shirt or polo t-shirt with Necker for meetings. We are happy for you to remove your formal shirt and just wear a t-shirt for the rest of the evening if you prefer. When travelling to Scouting events such as District/UK Camps it is normally expected you arrive wearing Top half uniform. Please check ahead of time with the leaders as to whether this should be shirt or if polo is acceptable. Other instructions will be given about event t-shirts /scruffs etc if appropriate. "Full formal uniform" = Necker & Woggle, Shirt, Black Trousers/Scout Activity Trousers, Black Shoes. This is expected for all formal occassions such as St Georges Parade etc. " Scruffs" is just that - scruffy! And is likely to suggest that the activities you will be involved in could get you wet or dirty or both (or not!) but Necker should be worn. (You may be asked to remove it for health and safety reasons dependent on activity) Where can I get uniform?Uniform can be purchased online and in some school suppliers however we encourage everyone to buy through the Scout Shop in Stanway, Colchester http://colchesterscoutshop.org.uk/ Their prices
are the same as those online and if they don't have something in stock you have seen online Roz will order it in for you. It gives you the opportunity to try on items but also by buying at the shop the Unit get a percentage of every pound you spend. We can then use this towards the cost of award badges etc. from the shop. They open Fri 7-9pm and Sat 9-12. Don't forget to tell them you are with Strood Explorer Unit! |
How often do I have to pay Subs?Subs are due in to coincide with the beginning of school terms: January, April and September.
We do however also run through the Summer Holidays and most half terms There is also an initial joining fee of £10 this helps to pay for your Necker, Woggle & Uniform badges What are Subs for?The Subs pay for "capitation"; annual insurance and membership paid to the Scout Association at HQ Gilwell and District. they also help us pay for rent of meeting place and its amenities. There is very little left over from this for activities and badges which is why we often try to fund raise.
Is there a joining fee?
Yes, we do need to ask for £10 to help toward your Necker, Woggle and Uniform badges Can I pay by cheque or direct debit?Parents can pay by BACS or standing order subs and also for pay by BACS for any extra activities pr of course you can pay by cash or cheque.
What if I lose my Necker or Woggle? You can buy another Necker (£5) or woggle (£1) through the Leaders. You can also buy woggles at the scout shop.
What can I do with old Scout uniform? If you are not handing it down to someone else we are always very happy to take it off your hands to sell to younger members or on ebay for fundraising towards the unit. See Hat about this!
Where do I get a Necker?Your Necker, badges and woggle will be presented to you on investiture. This is what your joining fee covers.
