New to Explorers Scouts?
|
Already an Explorer Parent? ........
|
Who can be an Explorer? Anyone aged between 14-18. Current Scouts can, with the agreement of leaders and parent, start attending both Scouts and Explorers from the age of 13 ½ but will not be invested as an Explorer until they are 14.
What & How?
Like all Explorer Units, Strood Explorer Scout Unit (ESU) is self-running & self-funding from Subs and fundraising efforts. We are however part of Colchester District Explorer Scouting and as well as the District Commissioner, we have a District Explorer Commissioner. We also have a partnership agreement with Mersea Scout Group and support them at local events etc. We hope that many of the Group’s Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will eventually join us. However we are NOT just for those on Mersea and are open to all the surrounding villages. In fact, it doesn’t matter where you live – anyone in this age range is welcome to join in the fun and activity!
The year’ programme is based on the ‘balanced programme’ set out by the Scout Association but is negotiated and planned by the whole of the ESU. More information about Explorers, opportunities, badges and awards etc at http://www2.scouts.org.uk/explorers/
After a few weeks of trying it out and deciding whether a young person wishes to become an Explorer Scout, investiture is discussed with the Leader. The young person may wish to have this ceremony at a normal meeting or somewhere unusual.
Although for many activities it is not required, all Explorer Scouts will need a Uniform Shirt and should bring it with them to meetings. Invested Explorers will be presented with a necker and woggle. They also have the option of having a Uniform Polo. Any items bought at the Scout Shop (Villa Road, Stanway) in Colchester will earn the Unit some cash-back if you tell them you are with Strood ESU for address and current opening times go to http://colchesterscoutshop.org.uk/

Where & When?
Strood ESU meets once a week, usually on Wednesday 7.30-9.15pm at either Melrose Road Scout HQ or at The Se Scout Hut, The Lane. Although we have a regular meeting night, we may sometimes make alternative arrangements depending on what activities we are involved in. For instance we may agree in our programme to meet on different nights or at the weekend instead sometimes. We will also try to work around the Explorers where necessary, for instance during GCSE term etc.

Safety, Concerns and Complaints?
All adults involved in Scouting are enhanced DBS checked and must do "Safeguarding Young People" training. Your child's safety is of utmost important and activities will be assessed for risk and precautions taken where necessary. We run an "In Touch" system for all activities whether at HQ or away. Leaders will always have a mobile telephone
with them and we must have a contact number for parents. When away you will be given a contact number for emergencies. We do also keep parents and Explorers upto date by text and email. We will copy parents into any email communications with young people. If you have any concerns at all about your child in Scouting please speak to a Leader. We are always happy to arrange to meet parents at any time outside of a meeting. You can phone, email or speak to any of us directly.
If you have a concern or complaint please in the first instance try to resolve things with the Leadership Team, however should you feel you need to, you can contact the District Explorer Scout Commissioner, Ben Hart on benhartdesc.estuary@btinternet.com

Special Needs
If a young person has any special needs, health problems or indeed you have any concerns about any difficulties they may be experiencing please speak to Hat or one of the Leadership team and we will discuss with you and agree appropriate plans and arrangements to ensure they can get the most out of their Scouting experiences.
Marauder Explorer Scout Subs
Please speak to the Leader team about current Subs rates.
They are due three times a year in January, April and September. Subs can be paid by BACS or monthly standing order if you find this easier (we can of course still take cash or cheque).
Explorers will be encouraged to be involved with how finances are managed and parents can request to view accounts.
